National Archives and Records Administration preserves the U.S. government records and manages the presidential library system. It also publishes laws, regulations, presidential documents, and other public documents. The chief administrator of NARA is the archivist of the United States. The Archivist of the United States is the chief official overseeing the operation of the National Archives and Records Administration. NARA's holdings are classed into record groups reflecting the governmental department or agency from which they originated. Records include paper documents, microfilm, still pictures, motion pictures, and electronic media. NARA's network of archives consists of archives I and II, 14 regional archives located across the United States, the presidential library system, and a number of affiliated archives. Established in 1934, NARA's collections include materials from 1775 to the present.
